Synaplex

Synaplex Shabbat strives to provide creative ways to celebrate Shabbat that will interest everyone. It is a "one size fits all" kind of evening that we hope you will participate in this year. Here are some answers to the most frequently asked questions about Synaplex.

What is Synaplex?
Synaplex is an innovative approach to the celebration of Shabbat. Congregation Beth Or is in its 3rd year of providing creative services and innovative programming for our congregation at this event. Synaplex, an initiative of the STAR Foundation (Synagogues” Transformation and Renewal), will draw you into the temple on Shabbat for a variety of activities on one night and under one roof – much in the way a multi-screen movie theater appeals to filmgoers with varying tastes.

When is it?

Synaplex Shabbats will be held two more times this year. The dates are:

June 6, 2008 - Kick off our summer BBQ series with this Synaplex Shabbat. Famous Dave's BBQ will be cooking up a storm. For details on the June Synaplex, please click on the link for a flyer.  RSVP to Tracey Borochaner at tracey@borochaner.corm

What should I expect?

At each Synaplex, you will receive a guide to the events of the evening. Read through the services and programs to find what interests you. Each Synaplex begins with a happy hour at 5:15 in the Spain Lobby where you can come and unwind with a glass of wine and some light snacks before services. Services begin at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 7 p.m. Shabbat Celebrations such as Israeli dancing, family activities, and other creative programs begin after dinner. On some occasions, we have a guest speaker who will discuss his topic immediately after dinner in the sanctuary. Babysitting is available after dinner for our youngest participants.

How do I sign up for dinner?

We offer a community dinner after services at 7 pm. Reservations are a must. You may choose to participate in the family dinner for all ages or the Candlelight and Conversation dinner for adults only. The cost for dinner is $18 per adult and $10 per child between the ages 6 and 13. Children under 5 eat for free. Vegetarian meals are available upon request.  We sometimes offer a pizza dinner for our preschool families at 5:30 pm for $7 per person.

You may RSVP by emailing Tracey Borochaner at tracey@borochaner.com , then send a check to the synagogue office: Attn: Synaplex. You can also RSVP via our newsletter which always has a dinner reservation form inside for an upcoming Synaplex dinner.

Sign up to receive synagogue emails with information about upcoming Beth Or events by emailing Elisa Heisman at eheisman@bethor.org

Who is invited to Synaplex?

All Synaplex events are open to the community. We encourage everyone to extend an invitation to your friends and neighbors to come as well. This is a great night to introduce Beth Or to those who have not visited with us before

What is there for my kids to do?

Children are invited to the happy hour where there will be kid-friendly drinks and snacks available to them. We always offer a tot service called Bim Bam at 6 p.m. This is usually led by one of our preschool teachers, our preschool director, and a song leader. At 7 p.m., we will have chicken fingers and French fries in the family dinner. Children with food allergies may bring their own meal as long as it is meat (no dairy please). After dinner, we offer a Pajama Shabbat program where children are supervised by experienced babysitters while you enjoy the rest of your evening. Children are welcome to change into their pajamas and enjoy quiet activities or watch a movie in one of our preschool rooms.

Do you need volunteers for Synaplex?

Yes, we do!!! If you are available during the day, you can help us set tables for dinner. If you can come early to a Synaplex evening, we would love help with last minute tasks before dinner. You can also work as a greeter at one of our services.

Finally, we welcome any ideas for creative programming and services at future Synaplex evenings. If you would like to join the Synaplex committee, please contact our Program Coordinator, Elisa Heisman at the Beth Or office at 215-646-5806 x207 or eheisman@bethor.org
