About Swann's War - a literary mystery by Michael Oren:

With Swann's War, Michael Oren turns his attention to World War II and delivers a page-turning, historical mystery novel filled with powerful imagery, masterful storytelling, and layered, unforgettable characters. In the tradition of Where the Crawdads Sing and the BBC’s Foyle’s War, Michael Oren bewitches readers with historical fiction set in the world of uncertainty that only exists in wartime.

World War II is raging overseas but life remains painfully quiet on the rugged New England fishing island of Fourth Cliff, where the only sign of war is the lack of able-bodied men and a hastily-constructed military prison camp for Italian POWs.

Newlywed and former Boston cop Mary Beth Swann had barely moved to the island when her husband Archie, Fourth Cliff’s beloved police captain, shipped out to fight in the Marines. Mary Beth steps into his law and order role, expecting a quiet existence on the island homefront.

When a murdered POW surfaces in a fisherman’s net, followed by more bodies, Swann struggles to command the respect of Fourth Cliff’s hardscrabble islanders, petty despots, and patronizing military officers. Determined to find the killer and prove herself, Swann must rely only on the help of a simple-minded deputy, a disgraced doctor, and a mob-connected mainlander while grappling with her own isolation, lack of investigative experience, and nagging self-doubt.
