Reproductive Rights Havdalah

Saturday, February 22 | 7pm

Join us for an evening of Social Justice and advocacy for women's rights! Repro Shabbat is an annual Shabbat celebration that honors the Jewish value of reproductive freedom. It takes place annually on Parshat Mishpatim, which contains the verses commonly referenced as the foundation of Judaism’s approach to reproductive health, rights, and justice. Individuals and communities across the world gather to celebrate Repro Shabbat and the Jewish traditions it honors.

Our program begins with Havdalah and a Parshat Mishpatim text study led by Rabbi Lefkowitz. We will then be joined by Shira Zemel (bio below) from the National Council for Jewish Women to share the work of the NCJW, as well as things you can do to help women nationwide. We will finish our evening with two hands on activities; writing thank you cards to abortion providers in PA and making care packages for women who have had an abortion.

This event is free, but we suggest an optional donation to the Jewish Fund for Abortion Access.

Bio for Shira Zemel:

Shira Zemel is the Director of National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW)'s abortion access campaign, the coordinated Jewish movement for reproductive health, rights and justice. In this role, Shira activates and mobilizes the Jewish community to take action for abortion access and reproductive freedom. Shira has spent her career developing programs and campaigns that bring people together around a shared purpose and trains leaders to bring their Jewish values into the public square. Shira serves as president of the ARCH board, a local abortion fund serving patients seeking care in northern Virginia. When not getting into good trouble and fighting for a just world, Shira enjoys curating feminist yard signs for her front lawn, listening to news and politics podcasts, and working on seasonal craft projects–preferably with her two young kids.
